Arena Homme + A/W 2012 Preview

What makes the Arena HOMME + of this day and age so distinctive is its distorted, neo-modern take on men's fashion. On the cover is a contortion of male faces blended into a David Bowie façade, a David Sims creation, entitled 'Bowie Virus'. In keeping with the spirit of the times, contributions by photographer Daniel Sannwald included not only a full fashion feature but also animated GIFs.

Balenciaga S/S 2013

Nicolas Ghesquière described Balenciaga this season as the "most sensual collection I've ever done,", which was clearly evident in the skin-baring tops and slitting long skirts. Always the modernist, Ghesquière merged movement with rigidity; with soft shapes came almost entirely stiff fabrics— in fact, t-shirts were dipped in glue. The brand's tradition fashions were re-worked into a fresh concept, bringing sensuality back to the present-day Balenciaga girl.

MY OWN TIMES

The Horyn-Slimane conflict has set the fashion world abuzz. Saint Laurent Paris creative director Hedi Slimane sent a bitter response via Twitter to fashion journalist Cathy Horyn's negative review of his debut womenswear show. Horyn, who writes for The New York Times, labelled his collection "a nice but frozen vision of a bohemian chick... Mr. Slimane’s clothes lacked a new fashion spirit," and went on to remark that fashion houses "Balenciaga, Dior, Givenchy, Céline, Lanvin — are having a terrific season." This article (which has since been removed by the NYT from their website) resulted in a seething retort from Slimane, as shown above.

Since then, Laura Craik of The Times UK has written an open letter to Hedi Slimane, and the Horyn-Slimane battle resumes with Slimane further tweeting about the debacle. From a objective point of view, the behaviour of both Cathy Horyn and Hedi Slimane should be denounced.

Backstage at Kris Van Assche S/S 2013

Kris Van Assche's vision for spring/summer 2013 menswear was reinventing the wardrobe basics, so it was no surprise the collection was simply entitled 'Tee'. The garments were very uniform-like, as is a Van Assche speciality, but also ventured into aspects of sportswear. 'Tee' displayed versatility and movement— qualities every modern man should have.

Igor Palmin

Igor Palmin is a Russian photographer who captured the reality of Soviet Russia in the 1970s-80s. From domestic life to armed forces during the dissolution of the U.S.S.R., Palmin says that his photographs are "about time... to become an object of observation in space, to accommodate all of us with our concerns, our affairs and vanity, our appearance, which sometimes reveal our essence, with the houses in which we live and daily street routes." Comeback Queen

Jil Sander made her return back to womenswear seem like a effortless transition. The spring/summer women's collection provided a foundation to start anew, and the show delivered with pure silhouettes and cohesive styling. Ms. Sander prides herself on her precise eye on tailoring— such fundamentals yielded to great effect, which is why such a simple collection became such a successful one. Concluding with pure white, decorated with iridescent circles, signalled a new chapter for the fashion house. Welcome back, Jil Sander.
